Tunku Danny Mudzaffar, Founder and CEO of microLEAP and President of the FootGolf Association of Malaysia (FGAM)

This weekend, the inaugural microLEAP FootGolf League kicks off, signalling the beginning of competitive FootGolf in the country. A little-known sport that combines the best of football and golf, FootGolf gained a lot of traction last year because of the pandemic. With approval by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the first season sees 21 teams consisting of 160 players competing for a first-of-its-kind accolade and a collective prize pool of RM 8,500 after twenty-one matches over a duration of five months at the Bukit Jelutong Golf Centre.

The league is sponsored by P2P (Peer-to-Peer) Shariah-compliant Financing Platform, microLEAP, with long-term plans to expand this partnership. FootGolf Malaysia has also joined hands with Astro as the official launch partner, with highlights of the league’s first week broadcast on Astro channel 801.

“We are extremely proud to finally kickstart the microLEAP FootGolf League. The sport has received a lot of interest in a short amount of time, which has culminated in this season’s kick-off. We would also like to express our gratitude to our sponsors, microLEAP, not to mention the support from Astro.  I hope that this is the beginning of more awareness of FootGolf as a sport and that it will inspire more fans, bringing the communities of football, golf and other sports together,” said Jeffrey Cottam, General Manager of FootGolf Malaysia.

While FootGolf has been played in Malaysia since 2018, it has recently garnered significant interest from football and golf fans especially since close contact sports has been limited due to the pandemic. The sport has a large following overseas in over 40 countries with around 250,000 players and fans from various continents. The first-ever recorded tournament is believed to be in the Netherlands in 2008, which has since caught on. Today, it is governed by the Federation for International FootGolf, which was established in 2012.

“microLEAP is proud to be the flagship sponsor of this exciting new sport. We believe it resonates with us as a brand and as fans of the sport ourselves. I’m excited to see where this partnership will go as we hope to have a long-lasting partnership with FootGolf Malaysia. We believe that such partnerships are important to build a strong, healthy and competitive community,” added Tunku Danny Nasaifuddin Mudzaffar, Founder and CEO of microLEAP and President of the FootGolf Association of Malaysia (FGAM).

microLEAP’s inaugural FootGolf League is set to be an exciting one, as organisers and participants alike find their footing in this competitive sport amidst Malaysia’s recovery from COVID-19. It hopes to pique the interest of Malaysians nationwide through the added exposure through the sport’s first competitive National league.
