Four Qualifying Tournaments Set for PGA Tour Series-China

PGA Tour Series-China announced its 2020 Qualifying Tournaments that will begin in January, with Foison Golf Club in Guangzhou hosting the Mainland China Qualifying Tournament. The other sites are Mission Hills Golf Club’s Lava Fields Course in Haikou, with Thailand’s Laguna Golf Phuket again a host site along with Laguna Bintan Resort in Lagoi, Indonesia—the first PGA Tour Series-China event held in that country. The final three tournaments are open to players from outside Mainland China.

In 2019, Laguna Phuket Golf Club was the first Qualifying Tournament held outside Greater China. Indonesia now joins that list.

Foison Golf Club will return as the site of the first Qualifying Tournament from January 7-10, 2020. This tournament is open only to Mainland China passport holders. The first of three Global Qualifying Tournaments for players outside of China is January 14-17 in Lagoi, Indonesia, at the Laguna Bintan Resort. Following a five-week break, with Chinese New Year during that time, the Global Qualifying Tournaments resume, with Mission Hills Golf Club’s Lava Fields Course the site on February 25-28. The last of the three Global Qualifying Tournaments and the final Qualifying Tournament of the season will be at Laguna Phuket Golf Club in Phuket, Thailand, from March 3-6.

The Tour will begin accepting applications for the Qualifying Tournaments from former PGA TOUR Series-China, Korn Ferry Tour, PGA Tour Latinoamerica and Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada members on November 11, 2019. Registration for everybody else will begin November 14.

Each of the Qualifying Tournaments will feature fields of 120 players, with the winner of each 72-hole, stroke-play Global Qualifying Tournament earning a full exemption for the entire 2020 season. The winner and those finishing between second and 12th at the Mainland China Qualifying Tournament will be fully exempt for the entire 2020 season.

At the Global Qualifying Tournaments, those finishing between second and 12th will have full status through the Tour’s first seven events of the 2020 season. Players finishing in the Nos. 13-35 positions and ties will have conditional status through the season’s first seven events. After the seventh regular season tournament, there will be a reshuffle based on 2020 points-list rank that will affect players’ rankings. The Global Qualifying Tournaments carry an entry fee of U.S. $1,650, while the Mainland China Qualifying Tournament will cost RMB 8,000.

“We have watched numerous players arrive at the Qualifying Tournaments, and a year or two later they are playing—and thriving—on the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour. It’s at the qualifiers where many of these players are beginning their professional journeys, and we recognize the talent that has come through our Tour during these past five seasons,” said PGA Tour Series-China Executive Director Greg Carlson. “The fact we play this Tour in China accentuates the importance of the Mainland China Qualifying Tournament. We will continue to identify the best, up-and-coming players from China, and many will come through our Qualifying Tournament as we remain committed to growing the game in China.”

Foison Golf Club’s Dye Course hosted the 2018 Mainland China qualifier and was the site of the 2016 season-ending Buick Open. The Cynthia Dye-designed course opened in 2012. Mission Hills’ Lava Fields Course is located in Haikou, off the southwest coast of Mainland China. The golf course, designed by Schmidt and Curley, navigates through volcanic rock and is one of 12 courses on the Mission Hills complex.

Architect Paul Jansen revamped and upgraded Laguna Phuket Golf Club in 2014, a course built among lagoons, native water grasses and mature woodland areas. The last International Federation of PGA Tours event held at Laguna Phuket Golf Club was the Asian Development Tour’s 2019 Singha Laguna Phuket Open, won by former Korn Ferry Tour player Miguel Carballo.

Laguna Bintan Resort is an original Greg Norman design that Laguna Golf revamped in 2016. The course offers ocean views early, plays through lagoons and jungles and then arrives back toward the sea.

“It’s always exciting to begin thinking about a new season, and going to Indonesia for the first time begins a new chapter in our history. We look forward to welcoming a mix of new players who will emerge from these qualifiers as well as those players who are returning,” Carlson added.

In 2019, PGA Tour Series-China Global Qualifying Tournament winners were Singapore’s Abdul Hadi, South Korea’s Taeho Kim and Dongmin Kim, with Cheng Jin capturing the Mainland China qualifier. Other Global Qualifying Tournament winners in the Series’ history are Americans Joseph Winslow and Jeffrey Kang (2018), China’s Yinong Yang, American Charlie Saxon and South Korea’s Sungpil Park (2016), Canada’s Justin Shin, American Kyle Souza and China’s Wenyi Huang (2015) and Australians David Lutterus and Alex Hawley (2014).
