Natasha Wins Ladies Title at the 117th Malaysian Amateur Open while Australia’s Lawry Flynn Captures the Men’s Title

After a phenomenal third round of 8-under-par 64, Malaysia’s Natasha Andrea Oon breezed through the final round of the 117^thMalaysian Amateur Open to clinch the Ladies Division title at Kelab Golf Sarawak. Her final-round 3-over-par 75 gave her the edge to win the title with a total of 12-under-par 276 and a 6-stroke victory.

“I am ecstatic to win the 117^thMalaysian Amateur Open,” Natasha said. “It’s great to win our National Amateur Open. I hope to continue my winning streak for the rest of the golfing season,” said Natasha who recorded one birdie, two bogeys and one double bogey to win the championship.

Alyaa Abdul Ghanny who shared the lead with Natasha after day two had to settle for a second place after carding even-par -72 for a 7-under-par 209 3-day total.

“It’s great to finish second as this is my first time playing in this Championship,” said Alyaa Abdul Ghanny. “I hope I would be able to be selected for the SEA Games 2019 in the Philippines,” said Alyaa who shared the lead with Natasha on the second day.

Lawry Flynn of Australia carded a 3-under-par 69 to win the Men Division his compatriot Low Wee Jin finished second after recording a 2-under-par 70 for 8-under-par 280 total.

Flynn shot birdies at hole #2, #6, and #9, and dropped a stroke at hole #8 on the outward nine. He carded 3 birdies and 2 bogeys on the back nine for 3-under-par 69 on the final round to lift the Men Division Challenge Trophy.

“My short game was really good all week,” he said. “My game feels really good right now. I’m just going to try and keep it up and get ready for the next tournament.”

“I hope I can continue playing well in Saujana,” Flynn explained. “To be able to win back to back would be awesome.”

Third place went to Indonesia’ Narajie Ramadhan who carded 2-under-par-70   for a 4-under-par 284 total.

Sarawak’s Malcolm Ting who shared the lead on the first two days finished tied for fourth place after shooting one-over-par 73 for one-under-par 287 total. Malcolm shared fourth place with Hong Kong Taichi Kho who carded 3-under-par 69 for 287 total.

The 157 men and 38 ladies field featured players from Australia, Bahrain, Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Korea, Philippines, Pakistan, Singapore, Fiji, Guam, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, UAE, Japan, and Malaysia. The blue ribbon event provides for World Amateur Golf Ranking points.

The tournament, which began in 1894 at the Penang Golf Club is one of the oldest amateur events in the world. That consistency has helped create a tournament steeped in tradition and has helped produced many champions who have graduated to the paid ranks like Mardan Mamat, Thongchai Jaidee and Mike Campbell to name a few.
