PGA TOUR Series-China Announces Additional Tournaments to Schedule
Following a successful start to the 2019 season, PGA TOUR Series-China announced the next three tournaments on its schedule, beginning with a return to China’s capital for the Beijing Championship May 6-12 at Topwin Golf and Country Club. The following week, players will travel to Qinhuangdao for the Qinhuangdao Championship at Qinhuangdao Poly Golf Club May 13-19. The three-tournament stretch concludes at the Yangtze River Golf Club in Nantong for the Nantong Championship.
“We have enjoyed a strong start to our season, with our tournaments in Chongqing, Sanya and Haikou, and this next set of events will allow us to maintain the momentum we’ve already established,” said Greg Carlson, PGA TOUR Series-China Executive Director. “We are pleased with the sites of these next three tournaments. We’re extremely familiar with Topwin, having played there three times in the past. And Qinhuangdao Poly Golf Club was a terrific host and partner for the first time in 2018. We are also confident players will find the Yangtze River Golf Club both a challenging and fair test.”
Topwin Golf and Country Club, located in the hills of Huairou at the base of the Great Wall, is an Ian Woosnam-designed signature course that hosted PGA TOUR Series-China tournaments in 2015, 2016 and 2018 and has previously been the site of three Volvo China Opens (2016-18). A year ago, Canadian Peter Campbell won for the first time on PGA TOUR Series-China, with a one-shot victory over China’s Huilin Zhang. Other Series’ winners at Topwin include Charlie Saxon (2016) and Bryden Macpherson (2015).
A year after Qinhuangdao Poly Golf Club was the site for its inaugural Series tournament, in early September 2018, the course will turn around and host this May event. Last year, New Zealand’s Nick Voke, currently a Web.com Tour member, won his first Series title with a playoff win against Steve Lewton after the duo finished regulation tied.
The Yangtze River Golf Club is a course adjacent to China’s most-famous river as the Series visits Nantong for the first time. Players competing in the Nantong Championship will encounter a course that features undulations amid lakes scattered throughout the property.
“These three events provide a nice pacing to our schedule and will allow players to test themselves on three courses that present a variety of challenges,” Carlson added.
PGA TOUR Series-China is in its fifth season, and Tour officials note that these three newly announced events will make up the 14-tournament 2019 schedule that will again take players to tournaments throughout China as well as to Hong Kong and Macau.
“We are continually impressed with the calibre of play our members are presenting to fans each week. With new players acquainting themselves with the Series this season combined with our veterans who have returned, we have a nice mix of talent this year—and it’s shown in the play during our first three weeks. Additionally, Carlson emphasized the positive growth the Tour continues to enjoy, as well as the Series’ place on the China sports scene.
“Our players shine a bright spotlight on the Tour through their immense talent, and our sponsors and course operators are doing their part to make PGA TOUR Series-China an important part of the overall sports scene in China,” he added.
Through three 2019 tournaments, winners have come from Japan (Taihei Sato) and the United States (Trevor Sluman and David Kocher). In 2018, Series’ winners were from six different countries, including two champions from China. The other countries who boasted winners were Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, South Korea and the U.S. Player of the Year and Order of Merit winner Callum Tarren of England is playing on the 2019 Web.com Tour.
