PGA TOUR Series-China Announces First Three Tournaments of 2019
PGA TOUR Series-China Series announced the first three tournaments of its 2019 schedule, an opening to the season that begins in late-March in Chongqing and then takes players for back-to-back tournaments in Hainan.
The Series is in its fifth season, and Tour officials are anticipating a 14-tournament schedule that will again take players to tournaments throughout China as well as in Hong Kong and Macau. PGA TOUR Series-China Executive Director Greg Carlson indicated the Tour in 2019 will continue to build on the momentum from its 2018 season.
“This is a strong start to our season, and we’re also excited about what the remainder of the year will offer,” Carlson said. “We are proud of the five top players on the Order of Merit who moved on to the Web.com Tour following our 2018 season, and we know much of their development as players came from their experiences on PGA TOUR Series-China. We fully expect that the returning players mixed with those who have already qualified—or will qualify—will continue to be the backbone of this Tour. We have seen so many of our players move on the great heights in the sport, and we have every reason to believe players from this upcoming season will continue that trend.”
The PGA TOUR Series-China will begin its season the week of March 25-31 in Chongqing when Poly Golf Club hosts the second annual Chongqing Championship, won a year ago by Yi Cao in a playoff over England’s William Harrold.
A week after the season-opener, players will travel to the island province of Hainan for a tournament in Sanya and one in Haikou. The Sanya Championship, a first-year event, is April 1-7 at Yalong Bay Golf Club. That will be followed by the Haikou Championship at the Sunac Haikou 3KM Golf Club, a tournament won in 2018 by South Korea’s Todd Baek.
“Chongqing, Sanya and Haikou are all cities that have played significant roles in the growth of PGA TOUR Series-China. We are visiting cities many of our players are familiar with while we will play at some new venues that I know the players will enjoy.
“We are very excited with the growth we’ve seen on PGA TOUR Series-China since the Tour’s inception in 2014.,” Carlson added. “The players, sponsors, course operators, tournament officials and everybody else associated with the Tour have made this a significant entity on the China sports landscape as golf continues to grow rapidly in this part of the world.”
PGA TOUR Series-China Series saw its 2018 winners come from six different countries, including two champions from China. The other countries who boasted winners were Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, South Korea and the U.S. Player of the Year and Order of Merit winner Callum Tarren of England is playing on the 2019 Web.com Tour
