PGA Tour Cancels The Players Championship and Upcoming Tournaments Until The Masters

The first round of The Players Championship had been played and Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama returned with a brilliant course tying score of 9-under 63 to take the first-round lead at The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. But alas, his score will now be stricken from the records as the tournament is cancelled.

Initially, the PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan had announced during the first round that the tournament that the event would be played, but without spectators, a policy that was supposed to continue until the event in Texas.

However, shortly after that, another statement was released by the PGA Tour stating:

It is with regret that we are announcing the cancellation of THE PLAYERS Championship.

We have also decided to cancel all PGA TOUR events – across all of our Tours – in the coming weeks, through the Valero Texas Open.

We have pledged from the start to be responsible, thoughtful and transparent with our decision process. We did everything possible to create a safe environment for our players in order to continue the event throughout the weekend, and we were endeavouring to give our fans a much-needed respite from the current climate.  But at this point – and as the situation continues to rapidly change – the right thing to do for our players and our fans is to pause.

The affected tournaments removed from the PGA Tour calendar include The Players, the Valspar Championship, the WGC-Dell Technologies and the Valero Texas Open.

Meanwhile, the Korn Ferry Tour also announced that they have suspended tournament play until April 5.
