Lam Crowned Champion of the Astro Masters 2019 Grand Final in Taiwan
Lam Kong Fong, 48, won the Astro Masters 2019 Grand Final that was held in Taiwan recently. The gross champion of Qualifying Round 1, Lam, emerged victorious from the field of 22 Finalists’ after the second round that was played at Ta Shee Golf & Country Club.
The Kedah-born Lam who plays of scratch, lifted the Astro Masters 2019 Champion Golfer of the Year title when he shot a 72 for a two-day score of 148. He was presented a Srixon driver, one Aldila Quaranta golf shaft and the champion’s trophy by Ms Hew Su Yen of Astro Malaysia.
In the first round held at Sunrise Golf & Country Club, the businessman posted an uncharacteristic 4-over-par 76 due to windy conditions. In the second round, he made birdies on the first and 18th hole to deny Wong Hong Nung the title by two shots in the gross category.
Three-handicapper Wong had cause to celebrate though, as he was crowned the Nett champion after posting a two-day score of 144.
The Guest Category was won by Utusan Malaysia’s Imran Mohd Nor. The 7-handicapper won on countback with a two-day total of 139 points.
In the novelty category, the Longest Drive was won by Champion Golfer of the Year, Lam. His drive on Hole 1 was 285 yards which won him an Aldila NV Touring golf shaft.
The Sure To Win Nearest-to-Pin contest on Hole 7 was won by Sabahan Tan Peng Juan. His ball came to rest 75 inches from the hole.
The Astro Masters is in its 22nd year of running and is renowned for holding the Grand Final overseas, having travelled to nine countries including Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Oman, China and Cambodia last year.
