Winnie Ng to Play with the Huskies in 2019

Winnie Ng Yu Xuan, the reigning double gold medallist in the 2018 Malaysia Games, recently signed the National Letter of Intent (NLI) to the University of Washington, a top 20 public university in the US and a top-ranked collegiate golf university (popularly known as the Huskies) that won the NCAA National Champion in 2016.

Winnie, who is currently ranked 599 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) signed the NLI at the Kolej Tuanku Jaa’far (KTJ) in front of her school’s Royal Governors, Trustees HRH Tunku Naquiyuddin, Tunku Imran, Tunku Puteri Jawahir, Principal Dr Glenn, Sportexcel Executive Director Mr Sivanandan, teachers and classmates.

The 17-year-old who represented Malaysian in the Jakarta Asian Games will sit for her SAT exam on 1 December 2018, IGCSE in May 2019 and is scheduled to leave for the University of Washington in Seattle in September 2019. Her future plan is to turn professional and play in LPGA after obtaining a degree in Business Studies.

Winnie won her first amateur title when she was 13 in the 41st Kelantan Amateur Open in 2015 and continued with the good run winning eight other amateur open titles in Sabah, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, and Terengganu.

She represented the country in the 1st Women Amateur Asia Pacific 2018 in Singapore and represented MALGA in the Queen Sirikit Cup in the 39th Asia-Pacific Women Amateur Golf Championship in China. She also represented Malaysia in the 2016 Junior Open in Kilmarnock, Scotland, 2016, and the 2017 APGC Junior Championship in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Besides playing in the amateur tournaments, Winnie qualified to play in the 2016 and 2017 editions of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia at TPC Kuala Lumpur. Winnie played extremely well and finished as the best Malaysian golfer. With her good showing, she made it into Official Rolex Women World Ranking where she is eligible to qualify to play in 2020 Olympic Games in Japan even though she is still an amateur golfer.
