Levy in the Hunt as Quiros Maintains Lead at Trophée Hassan II
Local favourite Alexander Levy is just one off the pace after a third round of 69 at Trophée Hassan II as Alvaro Quiros maintained his one shot lead at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.
Levy birdied the third and seventh holes to make the turn two under par, and two more birdies followed on the back nine before he dropped his only shot of the day on the par three 17th hole.
The Frenchman is joined in second place on six under par by South African duo Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Erik Van Rooyen, and Finland’s Mikko Ilonen, who carded the lowest round of the tournament, a six under par 66, despite the testing conditions in Morocco.
Levy said,“I’m really happy. I played really solid today and I think I keep my mind in a good way. That’s the good point. I practised a lot last week on my short game, and especially for me, on 13 was the more impressive. But yeah, I say to me, “Come on, you practise for that. Just make this one.” Yeah, it was a really good chip.
“It was not too windy, but it was tough, tough golf course. The pin was in a tough position. So it was good to play under the par today. No, it was a very good day for golf.
“We practice to be in this position. I think today, it was good because I kept my mind in a good way. So that will be my goal tomorrow to keep the mind in a good way and just enjoy and just play shot by shot and try to do the best I can.”
Quiros, who is seven under par through 54 holes, will go in search of his eighth European Tour title, almost a year after securing his seventh at the 2017 Rocco Forte Open.
“Well, I have to recognise that it felt a little bit like Russian roulette. Suddenly great shot, suddenly not that good, but I have to really believe that I fight very nicely, and that’s the most important thing, especially with the pin positions that we have played today. Some of them were a little bit too much, you know.
“I have played the first six holes in a very nice way, but with these pin positions, you can end up every single time in a 15-metre putt, a 12-metre putt when you are expecting to finish two metres away from the flag. So I’m happy to finish in level par today because it was my tricky day, I want to think, so hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day.
“We have a little breeze. Some moments there was a little bit of a wind but obviously, the pin positions that we have played today, some of them were completely, you know, out. But it is like it is. The pin position doesn’t move for any player. They stay where they are, so everybody has to play with the same pin positions,” said Quiros.
Sharing sixth place on five under par are Canada’s Austin Connelly, and 2016 Trophée Hassan II champion Jeunghun Wang
