100 Days to go Until The 147th Open at Carnoustie

Fans eagerly anticipating the return of golf’s original championship to Carnoustie have only 100 days to go before the world’s best golfers arrive at the renowned links for The 147th Open. 

The Open was last played at Carnoustie in 2007 when two-time champion golfer Padraig Harrington first lifted the iconic Claret Jug and preparations are being made to welcome the many thousands of fans who will arrive for a global celebration of golf at the Angus links from 15-22 July.  

Following the conclusion of a thrilling Masters Tournament last week, the golf season is underway in earnest and in just over three months attention will turn to The Open and the pursuit of the Claret Jug by the game’s greatest names including defending champion Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Henrik Stenson and the victor at Augusta National Golf Club Patrick Reed. 

It will be the eighth occasion that Carnoustie has hosted The Open with as the likes of Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Tom Watson and Paul Lawrie among those to have gone on to become champion golfer of the year at what is widely regarded as one of the most challenging courses in major championship golf. 

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Executive Director – Championships at The R&A, said, “The Open is only a matter of weeks away and there is a great deal of anticipation for when the global sporting spotlight once again falls upon Carnoustie for what will be a world-class festival of golf. 

“It is always exciting to see the venue for the Championship begin to take shape with the installation of the grandstands, spectator facilities, and iconic scoreboards and we look forward to the arrival of many thousands of fans from all around the world in July.” 

To mark 100 days to go until The Open, The R&A has shared exclusive images of the first grandstands being installed at Carnoustie which is being prepared for eight days of exciting and captivating golf from the world’s best players. 

A £5 million extension to Carnoustie Golf Links Clubhouse is also set to open this month. The community facility will include a bar and restaurant, locker rooms and caddy facilities, as well as a new pro shop. Seven golf simulator bays, featuring some of the world’s most famous courses, will also be installed in the building.
